No more lice thanks to these 7 free home remedies for head lice.
Lice don’t have wings, but they can jump from one person to another. You can hardly prevent you or your child coming in touch with children than have lice so treating head lice "head on" is the best way to get rid of these flat little parasites.
Lice attach themselves on the hair using their claws. You not only need to get rid of them, but also get rid of their eggs called nits. These nits stick to the hair shaft as if they were glued on it.
Although head lice are annoying, they are not life threatening and you can get rid of them using the following home treatments for head lice.
7 free home remedies to get rid of head lice
- Shaving your head is the best way to get rid of these pesky parasites. If the hairs are gone, the lice have no place to live.
- The simplest home remedy for head lice that my parents used when we were kids is using a lice comb. This comb should be available at your nearest pharmacy. A lot of work but if you have seen documentaries about monkeys, social grooming is something humans could use as well.
- Make your own anti lice shampoo using your regular shampoo added with 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon tea tree oil and 1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Apply this anti lice shampoo and cover your head tightly with a shower cap for half an hour. Rinse your head afterwards.
- Mayonnaise has been used for ages to treat head lice. As with the shampoo recipe above, it’s the oil in the mayonnaise that will kill the lice. Apply mayonnaise on your head at night and sleep with a shower cap over it. In the morning, use a good shampoo to get rid of the sticky mayonnaise. Check hair scalp regularly afterwards and repeat treatment if needed.
- Like mayonnaise, petroleum jelly can equally be used to effectively cure your head from lice. Apply petroleum jelly all over your scalp and sleep overnight with a shower cap. The jelly loosens lice from your hair. Getting rid of the petroleum the next morning is a bit more difficult, so you will need a very good shampoo or a few washings.
- Another oil based lice cure can be made with 20 drops each of eucalyptus essential oil and tea tree oil, 10 drops each of aniseed essential oil and lemon oil added to 75ml olive oil. Apply this on your hair for at least 1 hour. Then rinse your hair with plenty of water to get positive results.
- Oil and vinegar are also mentioned as head lice treatment because lice hate both oil and vinegar. Make a solution of baby oil – or any other mineral oil – with an equal proportion of vinegar. Apply this oil-vinegar mixture on your hair scalp for two hours and rinse off.
It is important that you choose one of the above home remedies that suits you best. I can imagine not everybody wants to be shaved bald.
You also need to know that you need to get rid both of the lice as of their eggs, and the best way to do that is using a lice comb.
Scientists do say submerging mice in water for 8th hours won’t kill lice. This is true, but the above home remedies use oil and not water! These home remedies have been used for centuries, and you don’t see too many pictures of bald children in your family album, do you!
Do make sure you cure yourself from head lice, otherwise you may end up losing your hair after all and even damage your scalp.
